Range Day with a 405 Winchester Hi Wall in So Cal.
Brian,
Thanks for posting up the pic's for me. Went down to ncsapala.com range on Monday to work on sorting out a new front sight and load development. RCS, I wanted to get a couple pic's posted for you to see since you like single shots. This is a newer Hi Wall made by C Sharps in Big Timber,MT. Its in 405 Win and hopefully a morning Elk rifle for next fall/winter season in Colorado. There is a pic of the range from parking lot and the last is looking out to the Pacific Ocean near Dana Point Harbor flying up the 5Fwy heading north. Its about 2hrs before sunset.
Have a Good New Year,

Thanks for posting the nice photos of your Hi Wall and range. A lot of sharp edges on your receiver, originals are smooth. I found an old survey of the Winchester records of some 109,999 serial numbers of the Winchester single shot Model 1885 that showed the calibers that were chambered by Winchester. Some 65% of these were chambered for 22 rim fire, 32-20 and 32-40 . There were
some 34 chambered for the 405 Winchester by the factory. Early Winchesters used the long flat mainspring under the barrel and by around WW1 the coil spring was introduced for the hammer (this
coil spring hammer is very much like our AR-15 hammer & spring and the Soviet AK47 hammer and spring arrangement)
Gunsmiths of the post WW1 era found that you would need a coil spring hammer in order to install a very large diameter barrel in the Hi Wall receiver as the early long main spring could not be used.
My Winchester Hi Wall has a very large B.W. Darr barrel installed chambered for the 32-40 Winchester. Also have a breech seater to load the 216 gr bullet into the chamber throat, than you load the powdered cartridge case. You do not use loaded cartridges. My Winchester has original Winchester double set triggers which are quite light. I have different scopes but use the Redfield 24x now.
My favorite bullet mould is a Hoch nose pour that is lathe bored, you do not have to size the bullets as they are made to fit your barrel.
Nice set up. I had one of those Redfield's and helped a guy out,but should had held on to it. Like many things they pass through or I always can get another. Harry Pope favored the 32-40 I believed. Its really a nice looking cartage. I have had 2 originals 1 in 45-70 a special order in 1889 and custom in 50-90 with a Lyman 5Aon it. There are too many things out there that catches one's eye. Glad you liked it RCS.
take care,

Last Monday took the 405 out for another spin. Still sorting the sights out,but the front sight made out of "key blank" of white brass helps being .087 wide. Much like our beloved M1&M14 barrel indexing is critical for iron sights for maintaining a mechanical zero on both the front&rear sight. Will run a few more down the tube to get base line for group size and point of arm vs point of impact. Then may tweak the barrel index to center up the sights for the mechanical zero. This picking the fly s--t out of the pepper is maddening in setting a zero. Running a 300gr jacketed soft point with 5744 pushing it down the tube. Will keep up updated if this doesn't bore you guys.

RCS,
The world of single shots is amazing in that the rifles were built to WIN. These men were serious "hard holders" and serious about their game. I'm in the process of finishing up the 405. Its been color case by Turnbull and rust blued. There are a few more little details that need to be done. I was hoping to take it to Colorado deer huntingOct22-30 but ran out of time. I sent Brian a pic of the 2x3 mule deer I got on opening day. I have hunted up in Crawford Colorado for last 15yrs as a guest on a 7,500arce hunting range that backs into BLM Land. I really enjoy that you appreciate singe shots RCS and your post.
