out of battery fired 22 rim fire

About six months ago, I was shooting a AR-15 carbine with a Cobra 22 rim fire conversion kit, the range was 20 feet and the carbine was shooting good groups with iron sights. The ammo was CCI standard velocity, when a different bang and smoke came from the port. As the bolt was picking up the cartridge from the magazine to feed into the chamber, the cartridge fired. The firing pin may have struck the rim firing the cartridge while feeding. The case was split open at the mouth and the un-chambered bullet was in the magazine area. No damage to the weapon and I always wear eye protection when shooting. I have fired a few hundred round since this out of battery and never had a problem. Click image for larger version
