    single shot rifles

Always liked single shot rifles and have built-up a few from 22 rim fire to 45-70 over the years

Photos how a Ruger No 3 that I re-stocked in birdseye maple (wood came from a friend at the
gunsmith school in Denver). Rebarreled to 308 Win and installed the old Canjar set trigger

    RCS,
I'm on the same page. I picked up a C Sharps 1885 in 405Win. and in the process of developing loads. Trying to decide if I want to scope it or go with open sights. The front sight is the issue trying to pick it up. Most of the one's I have owned in the pass were 45-70.

Here is a photo of a 45-70 Remington rolling block in 45-70, I had made the rear tang sight for shooting steel plates (black powder)

The rolling block has two problems, very poor trigger pull and using longer than 45-70 length cartridges. I really don't use this rifle
much as I have a nice Winchester Hi Wall in 32-40 (Darr barrel)

I see a paper patch bullet or known to some "spit wad". I will take a couple pic's of mine send them over to one of the Brian's to post. There is a Shilo 45-70 and the C sharps Hi Wall in 405. There is a little 22RF Rolling Block I might pick up. Biggest problem with single shots they a like M1's or M14 platform to many of them and if you go off the deep end you want them all. Your Darr barrel I'm not familiar with. I seem to be fascinated by barrels. I have a few Krieger,3groove Lilja,5R ObermeyerM14,working on a Dawnly on 35 Whelen.

About 15 years ago, I converted a Remington rolling block that my father had purchased years ago for $9.95 (hunters Lodge)the 43 cal South
American model in NRA "poor" condition, rusted action and wood was about gone. I cut the barrel to ten inches and bored it out to half inch
then installed a heavy 22 rim rifle barrel into the old barrel with the rear part of the rim fire barrel turned down. Also converted the breech to rim
fire and made a new extractor, squared the action up on my mill and bent the lower tang. As I really don't like the factory trigger, I made a new
trigger and sear for a nicer pull. Sent the action to SD for the case color. Used a blank of Calif walnut to make the stock & fore-end

Nice SMITHING. I have done a couple 14's platforms and a little tinkering, but nothing at that level. I have a friend who has done it all running a repair business for 15yrs. He does it for fun and is helping me a the various projects I'm working on. The latest is a basic SAI 1911 that I replaced all the parts with USGI and making a MARSOC 1911 type. Ask me about casting bullets I'm pretty at that. Teach how to cast big 500gr 45cal. to run out to 985yds down at the Pala Range in So Cal. Take a peek at the range ncsaPala.com. There is some big dogs down there shooting BPSC stuff.

Some moulds that I have used for rifles, both black powder and smokeless. The first photos show the
Hoch lathe bored mould which is nose pour - this produces a perfect bullet base. The mould is custom
to your rifle bore and you do not have to size the bullet.
The other photos show a paper patch bullet from a mould the I made (cylindrical) from aluminum, also
nose pour and adjustable for bullet length (weight). The 32-40 Hoch bullet is very accurate.

                    RCS,
Have you heard or have used the "Money Bullet" from Buffalo Arms. That seems to be the bullet of choice at Pala my home range. In 45cal its a big 550gr I believe. I have been casting since I was 10 I believe and 63 now. All I shot was lead bullets till I got in blasted 14 platform. Now its SMK 168,weighing each charge. You think we were shooting for naked women and Corvettes. It warms my heart knowing there is someone else that cast. It separates the wheat from the chaff. See you are Advanced Collector, but since you cast&make paper patch you are one of the lead dogs.

Pfc Thomas, here is my favorite single shot rifle, the Winchester Hi Wall with Winchester factory double set triggers. The hammer
has the coil spring (like the AR-15 and AK) . The barrel was made by B.W. Darr and has a breech seater for the bullets as you do
not use fixed cartridges. The scope is a Redfield 24x. Caliber is 32-40 Winchester

That is an excellent well made reproduction Sharps and about the best iron sights available. Everything from the butt plate
to the spirit level front sight is outstanding. Many years ago I was going to buy a Sharps Borchardt target rifle in 45-100
                            but could not afford it

some Sharps cartridges (un-marked is 45-120)

M14Brian,THANKS and I will have to buy you dinner again at the Costa Mesa Show. Its Aug 22-23 and if you can't make it I will send money. RCS,I need to learn how to do the photo post, but thought you might enjoy these. The bullet mold is a Paul Jones 500gr. It gets you attention when you light it off. It takes about 4sec for the bullet to impact the target at a 1,000yds. Too many rabbit trails when get into this game of shooting.
