In the "Garand Collectors' Journal", Volume 16, Number 1, Winter 2001 issue, on page 4, Bob Seijas says, in an article entitiled "Gas Trap Redesign" that "Most of the old style [Gas Trap] rifles were recalled and rebuilt with the new system."

The government never recalled the Gas Trap Garand . They were used until unserviceable then were rebuilt to newer standards.
