During the late 1950's and into the early 1960's. the US Army Marksmanship Training Unit at Fort Benning, experimented with large capacity magnum cartridge cases for use at long range targets. They eventually selected a cartridge case very close to the wildcat Ackley Improved 300 magnum. The first cases were made up from the 300 H&H case as were Ackley's cases. Soon Remington made cases up for the unit but altered their head stamp, finally Winchester Western made cases specifically for the USAMTU and head stamped W C C 60 using a military type head stamp for 1960. Rifles used for cartridge testing were Winchester Model 70 and Remington bolt actions. These special carrtridges were still being used in 1000 yard matches during the early 1960's. Eventually these AMU cartridges were replaced by the 30-338 case.
