Early 6 groove Smith Corona 1903A3

This is an early Smith Corona that I've had for many years. Untill recently I never noticed it has a 6 groove barrel. From what I have read, High Standard who subcontracted the barrels, had about 5,000 .30 cal 6-groove barrel blanks on hand at the beginning of the contract. They were allowed to recontour them to 03A3 specs and provide them to Smith Corona. The rifle has all SC parts that I can see. There are no R marked small parts on the gun.

Always better to have than the Remington 03A3 and the unique SC X on the bolt too

I have that same but on a Remington. It is very shiny like chrome. Any clues to why so bright? Replaced it with a blued Remington bolt.

Some shooters will polish the 1903 bolt and inside rails of the receiver like the pre WW2 National match 1903 rifles for a faster/slick operation

photo shows a 1931 NM 1903 rifle with a polished NS bolt, restocked with (I think a 1937 NM stock) barrel is star gaged SA 7-29 Click image for larger version

Very nice early Smith Corona 03A3. First hi power rifle I ever shot was a SC. It always amazed me how office machine companies like Smith Corona, Underwood, IBM, National Postal Meter and Royal McBee converted to firearms manufacture successfully.

Nice 6 groove, I have one that it only a few thousand away from a standard rifle. Both are in the 4.81m range and not as early as yours. Both assembled late in 43.

SC are my favorite o3a3. Have a few in the safe. Nice 6 groove. I use an unbent paper clip to count the grooves.
