    National Match M70 Rifle

This 1947 manufactured M70 NM rifle was sold in a lot of 12 rifles by the Great Lakes Naval Base some years ago.
They did not always cut stuff up. A local dealer in a large gunshop bid on the lot of M70 rifles and won the bid. All
but four were the heavy barreled NM M70. A few had broken stocks but most were in excellent condition and both
myself and a few friends bought these rifles. They are still excellent shooters but long ago replaced by the 40X

      Robert,
What was the first year of manufacture for the M70?

The Winchester Model 70 was introduced in 1936. There was also a Model 70 chambered for the 300 H&H with a
28 inch bull barrel at 12 1/2 lbs. The Model 70 was changed in 1964 and collectors always called the early rifles
pre 64. At one time you could but a Model 70 chambered for the 220 Swift that fired a 48 gr bullet at 4110 fps in
        a stainless barrel
