    M1 Carbines

I'm wading into the market on Carbines and I am pretty clueless on what to look for. I know I don't want a import marked carbine. Unfortunately, I can't get to the CMP store anytime soon to pick up one from the latest release. Any advice?

Two days and no one has replied. Not good. We need more M1 Carbine buffs here. Spread the word!!!

I hadn't heard that CPM was offering any more carbines. Are they not taking on line orders?

I have a few of them that I bought before the last offering. But I got an early Plainfield receiver from CMP when they were selling for very little money. I put a new barrel on it using RCS's kind loan of a finish chamber reamer, put it into a Choate folding stock with one of those Picatinny handguards and a Doktor red dot sight. Works like a charm.

No luck on the private sale market? I know prices are way up, but you should be able to find a nice example out there somewhere. Or are they that much cheaper through the CMP?

The CMP has had a small quantity in store. Some reparked with new wood which I passed on when at the store mid July. Since then they have some non reparked for $800!
As for the private market I feel like most are inflated price wise and finding something local has been unfruitful.

Non reparked for $800 and the gun show prices are crazy.
I'm afraid if I ever decide to do a U.S. rifle collection, I'm just going to have to pay the big bucks. I don't think there are any good deals anymore. Someone should kick me in the jimmy, my Dad got me a 1944 Inland from a garage sale in 1987 for $30. I fixed it up,and stupidly sold it about 10 years later. Regret all of the military rifles I sold off.

I bought my 6 digit Inland about 18 years ago for less than $200.It pretty much represents every manufacturer, but is very accurate.I just don't have the same love for them that I do my M1 rifles

I don't like them as much as the M1 or M14 type rifle either, but they are so fun to shoot and are unique in a collection. Finding good magazines proved hard for me at the time too.

There's nothing wrong with an import marked carbine; don't rule it out if you manage to find a good one.

Theres always the CMP auction, but you're definately going to be paying premium for a good GI carbine. Ive picked up several import marked rifles locally, and they turned out to be great shooters. Good deals come up from time to time, you just have to be ready to snag it up when they do.

Here is my sons NPM that I gave him for his 13th birthday. I bought it when the CMP listed them. It is a Italian return. I paid $495 Yankee dollars for it. Unless owning one is on your bucket list I wouldn't pay the prices for what they are going for now.

That's a nice one. I cringe at today's prices compared to what my Dad paid for mine when I was 15, it was 1987 though, it cost $30. I was dumb and sold it.
If I start a military rifles collection (I only have M1As), of course I will need one, and they're $$$$$ for a really nice one.

I have an IP that I've had for the better part of 30 years and I'm into it for less than $200. Does that count?

I have all intentions of posting once/if I can figure out what I'm doing wrong.
