    question about M14 slotted hand guards

    Any information about the M14 slotted hand guards: which manufacture used them on production rifles? How long where they in service?, Click image for larger version

    As I remember slotted guard use was started in 1961 and solid gaurds were standard issue just a year or so later. Cant help you with manufactures

      According to "M14 Rifle History and Development," by Lee Emerson (2004), the first handguards were black walnut; this changed to slotted fiberglass in April 1961. The slots weakened the handguard and allowed mirage in rapid fire, so were changed to solid sometime in 1962. He doesn't list manufacturers or codes. Correct (original) solid guards may be found in "coffee," brown, dark brown, and black. Some slotted guards were painted silver on the underside to reduce heat buildup. HTH.
