    Armalite AR Lightweight Rifle

The winter 2019 issue of the Garand Stand Report has an article and photos on Armalite AR Lightweight Rifle. This rifle is from 1955. Can someone provide more info on this rifle. I have never heard of this rifle before. It seems to predate the AR10.

It is the AR-3 prototype chambered for the T65E3 cartridge which became the 7,62mm NATO cartridge. Designed and built by Stoner before his Armalite days. It has an aluminum receiver with a front locking multi lugs. Stock is fiber glass filled plastic. Rifle is semi auto and very light weight. Tests were only marginally successful.

Thank you Robert. I knew you would know. I had no info on it. Does it use a barrel extension like a Johnson and Johnson type multi lug bolt?

I would think the barrel would have an extension like the AR-15 design and multi lug bolt. Almost around the same time period Winchester introduced their Model 100 semi auto rifle chambered for the 308 Win cartridge. Some years later, Ruger designed a larger model of their Mini 14 except in 308 Win, almost made it into production but certain problems were never solved.
