    Hello from Manteno, Illinois

I am new here and am wondering how to relieve the spring pressure on the hammer without dry firing. I assume dry firing an M1 will damage the firing pin. Sorry for such a simple question but this is my first Garand. Thanks, Jim

    Welcome to the forum.

Dry firing a garand won't hurt anything. Garands were dry fired plenty of times by soldiers in boot camp before they actually fired a live round.
I dry fire all the time when I practice.

Welcome, from the once great Golden State.
If you don't want to dry fire the rifle, pull the bolt back about an inch, pull the trigger to drop the hammer and ease them forward.
