    Gunsmiths

Looking for a good gunsmith to change my barrel. I have a ceremonial m1 and the barrel is spot welded to receiver and would like to know if the receiver can take a new barrel

Can you grind down the weld, meaning if it’s a spot weld. Or is it welded all the way around this would more difficult. If it’s a spot weld and you can see the barrel crack between the barrel and receiver. This is not easy to do, but tape off the receiver so you have a good reference line, only a very thin carbide cutting wheel and cut the weld free of the receiver, being very careful not to cut into the receiver, when they do that they don’t want the rifle to be returned. Also it’s quite possible that the receiver was a reweld, I would sure check that, You can always buy a receiver and a barrel. And use all the other parts to build you another Garand. Just my thoughts on the subject. Salute AJ.
