How much copper can one barrel have?

The barrel on my newest garand has a springfield 65 barrel. I have been cleaning it for 2 days and i am still getting green patches. Did the previous owner never clean it or is there another problem? Anybody else ever run across this?

What are you using to clean with? Are you using a copper cleaner and a brush?

Im using butches bore shine and a brush went from dark green to light. Is it possible to overclean?

Yes it is , also remember if its a brass brush the chemicals are eating it giving false green patchs

So if my wet patches come out without green i have all the copper out?

I have two Remington 40XB single shot rifles, one in 222 Rem and the other in 308 cal and use JB bore paste as per directions to remove cooper fouling. Also works on military rifles too

Some of the "veteran" surplus rifles I've gotten had heavy buildups of metal inside the barrel. One of the worst was a #4Mk2 that appeared to be pitted, and I got it for a pretty low price. I wound up using SWEETS for almost a month, and wound up with a like new barrel after. When I sent nearly everything off to auction after a "red flag" confiscation attempt, that rifle I kept.

This is an old post, I think, what kinda bore cleaner are you using? I use hoppies and follow up with Remington oil, when I store. My Last Garand patched about 10 green patches, ran a copper brush twice dipped in hoppies, I’ve always been told never run a copper brush dry thru your barrel! Thought that in Military School, we had Springfield 22s wish I had gotten one of those, I was Stationed on Okinawa in the Army when the School closed. When you went to the range to fire, I always cleaned the barrel, didn’t use Hoppies, had some OD can military stuff, shot 50 rounds, at 25 We were supposed to clean the Barrel again and after your completion you cleaned and lubed. Some cadets didn’t do that, I Think maybe the school had about 60 rifles. So you never got the same gun. To get a rifle badge you had to post the last 3 of the serial number. I was a sharpshooter, in my third year I shot Expert.

Hi Mike don’t know if your still here, but my wife’s dad had a Remington semi auto carbine. I don’t think he ever cleaned it, started acting up because he never lubed it, because he never cleaned it. His eye sight was also failing, after Deer season I brought the 308 home and started working on it. Ordered Lupiod scope, sighted it for 50 yards. It was already drilled for a scope, just had to get the right mounts. You talk about green, I finally got it cleaned up, really turned out to be a nice Carbine, but you could barely see the rifling, Hoppies got it cleaned, with lots of time and effort. The green I’ve been told is dissimilar corrosion. When ever you store your arms, always oil the bore, once a year I clean my weapons that are stored. My Shooters get cleaned often. My 1903 I bought in Hawaii National Guard, the Barrel was beautiful, it was stored with Grease in the Barrel.
