I just checked one of my M1s last night and found that it has developed rust in some not too wonderful areas. Apparently, it developed on the extractor from what I can gather. Seems there is some rust on the bolt lug, too as well as some surface rust on the trigger guard and op rod handle. The area that's worrying me the most is the chamber is in the white and it has a small area of rust on the exposed portion above the bolt when it is fully closed. The rifle has been promptly broken down and the affected parts have been separated so the problem doesn't get any worse.
I took as many precautions with it and haven't shot it since I bought it a year ago. I kept it in a case wrapped in VCI, but its my fault for not having a safe with a dehumidifier in it. Lesson learned. Before I purchase another firearm, I'm getting a safe. Better safe than sorry. I just wish it wasn't my gas trap convert.
What's the best way to combat this. I realize once its developed, then you're stuck with the ramifications and after effects. I've read that using Rem Oil, Hoppes #9, or Kroil in combo with fine brass wool is the best to avoid scratching the finish. What would you guys do in this case? I can upload pictures for the forum's benefit.
