Question for those with more knowledge

I think my next Garand purchase might be an M1D. The M1C is more money than I wish to spend.

I am a shooter-not a collector. The question then is, is the M1D accurate enough to interest me as a shooter. I have read accounts of folks having problems zeroing. Looking on the internet, it looks like $2000 plus would be the cost.

Is the CMP rack grade an option? The description states no accessories. I assume no scope, cheek rest , flash hider, and no scope mount?

I have two Springfields that are both dead nuts accurate. The new (to me) service grade will arrive Monday. Three will be enough.

    Thoughts?
    Thanks

    Dave,
What distances are you going to be engaging paper targets (or steel perhaps) at?

The farthest targets around here are 10" plates at around 450 yds.

Very doable with an M1D. It's going to come down to the tuning of the rifle and the ammo used. Even with the side-mounted optics you can walk the rounds onto the target out there. Anything under 200 yards is a breeze for the D, and many will say the same about anything under 500 yards with the same rifle and the right loads. You may want to hit up Phil McGrath here on this site for specifics. There are others as well whom have forgotten more than I'll ever know about the D, but I can tell you that 450 yards is not going to be a problem for a well-tuned D.

Sure thing. And, if you want a slightly cheaper route, check out the BRAND NEW commercially made D barrel that I have listed for sale
Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously though, hit up Phil about special loads. Good luck!!

Jersey D: that is a brilliant idea. I could send it to CMP for proper fitment.
I will research mounts and scopes between Christmas events tonight and tomorrow.
          Thanks

I am building up a clone, but using a new 308 barrel. Turning the barrel to fit the barrel block. This is just for fun, no other reason.

Repro mount and rings? I'm not interested enough to spring for USGI prices.

yea, repro. Mount and barrel block from Sarco, repro scope just ordered from someone online. It was on sale for $180 I think. If I didnt already have a barrel ring and a new 308 barrel I would seriously think about Jersey Devil's new barrel he has for sale. I have read the new M1D barrels Sarco is currently selling hand time too close to 12:00 and they are too loose when cranked tight. Jersey said his hand times about 4:30 which should draw up nice. I am not anal about my build, just a fun clone. Hope it will shoot nice.

I'm starting the same project 1911; scope here, block and mount arriving Monday.

I built a D(uplicate) earlier this year using somebody's barrel, and had to shim it .040" to get it timed correctly. I think I can do better than that, so am giving it a go. I purchased the M1D drawing book from Eric Nicolaus a week or so ago, so have all target dims and fits...

Good luck with your build! My first one came in at about $1300, and hope to reel this one in for about $1000...

I can send the rifle to Shuffs or the CMP Custom shop to install the mount. Both are $150 but Shuffs will also cut down the handguard (included). The getting the rings to stay tight will be interesting. Best M84 scope price I see online is $312 from keepshooting.com

The M1D is no more accurate than a standard Garand, it just has glass. A rack grade is the lowest grade so would not expect the best accuracy.

I've decided to use one of my Springfields. It has proven to be accurate (as I can be).

I contacted Shuffs (and he replied on a Sunday) and will be sending him the project. I am slowly searching for the best price on a repro M84 scope. No great hurry.

                        This will be fun.

keep an eye on keepshooting.com. They just had a sale of these for under $200. I snagged one. I am going to send my 308 barrel and receiver to Shuff also to cut my barrel for the block. Sounds like he does good work.

Jersey, thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm not the go too guy for the M1D or C but will add my .02 worth anyway. The best advice I can give too anyone doing this conversion needs too get there D block from a reputable source many are soft and the threads are known too pull out, same for the knob.

Reload advice I am more than happy too help out with, I don't own Quick Load but I can give info on the traditional Match loadings and a few modern lower recoil loading some of you guys might really like.
