Question Re: Nickel Oiler

Hi everyone. I have several original nickel oilers.

My question is about one I have which has a brown leather pad at the end instead of a black leather one.

Does anyone know if this is a later or earlier item?

My wag is that they were probably all brown at inception but years of usage turned them black.
