    Gun Show Hilarity

So I went to a gun show a few weeks ago in the area, and there was a guy selling two nice M1s on a table. He had army fatigues and a Army shirt on. Anyways, he asked about the M1 I had on my shoulder (the one in the for sale forum). So I handed it over and told him what it was. He then asked how much I wanted for it, and I told him I wanted $1000 even, but I would take less depending on what his offer was. He then asked if I would take $600 for it. Of course, I politely declined. He then handed it back and said, "Well that's all its worth son. You obviously don't know much about these guns." So I gladly took my rifle back and thanked him for looking (politely and with a smile ). So then I proceeded to look at his Garand's on the table. One was an HRA mixmaster with a saw cut gas cylinder and commercial wood, the other was a 1.3 million SA with post-war wood and a painted black gas cylinder that was flaking. And it was slightly pitted. Oh, it was a mixmaster by the way too. Both had price tags that were over $1150 on them. Inwardly I laugh, and say, "Man yours are pretty high for nothing special mixmasters! Put a minty LEAD, RRAD or Tooele rebuild that wasn't re-issued on the table and then we'll talk!" I know what I have, and I know $1000 may be a little high for my rifle, but, I am prepared and willing to take less because I know it is just a run of the mill gun. And let's face it, trying finding a decent M1 on the secondary market for $1000 or less. They are out there but scarce. Now, he is asking more than I was for mine, and not only were his nothing special, but he wasn't even willing to budge on price. It was a take it or leave it deal. Oh well. Sorry, I just have to blow off a little steam.

I saw a real run of the mill mixmaster in marginal condition at best including less than good wood at the Costa Mesa show yesterday for $1350. He must've been that guy's brother in law.

From what I have learned M1 Garands are bringing different prices in different regions of the country same with M1 carbines. For my area a run of the mill M1 Garand will bring $1000.00.
Anything special the prices climb. M1 carbines 18 months ago could be had in my area for as cheap as $450 for an import and $650 for a non import mix master. Now a nice mix master non import is $1000. Forget black rifles dealers can not give them away. Nice M1As can be had for $1100 to $1250.

I would trade a nice carbine for a nice M1A all day!

I was in my local gun shop that is the largest in the area. The cheapest M1 carbine was a Howa Thai Police carbine at $895. The rest of the carbines were $1100 to $1495.

There's a listing on GB right now where somebody is trying to get over $1,500 for an SA FG with HackBerry stock that was put on the CMP rack last July. Its essentially identical to the SA FG with HackBerry stock I purchased last May at the CMP south store for $650. Nobody's bidding on it...

+1 to RDS, an average M1A was $1350 and a new production M1A Scout was $1650. A Hook Boutin match built M1A was going for $3000. Decent Carbines were $1500., just nuts.

I think what drove up carbine prices are the cost of the current Auto Ordnance and Inland repros.

There was a super beautiful LRB M14SA with a custom english walnut stock and built with all NOS H & R parts that the broker said had 20 rounds through it, immaculate, priced at $5000. If I had the cash and it had been unfired I'd have swiped it up but of course I don't have the $$$$ for that anymore or the luck to find a true NOS unfired H & R barrel. I have been hunting for one for 5 years.

I have seen straight M1 carbines with asking prices as high as $2200. So so Winchester mixmasters for over $1000. Like I said different regions of the country different prices.
What are M1 carbines going for in your area?

All over the board but starting at about a grand. Honestly I don't keep track of them, I just know that I shake my head a lot and look at it like people have gone a little nuts.

I agree it crazy. Its not like they are scarce except for certain models. Hopefully CMP will find more.

No body is going to bid on it either. Why pay a premium when you can go to CMP and get one for a lot cheaper. I just don't understand Carbine prices either. All over the map (literally) and seemingly run of the mill ones for are asking around 1200 here.

If you think that's outrageous, last month I was at a gun show here in Michigan and saw a table full of beat up and abused Mosins that were priced from $400-$695.! Beat up Yugo SKS for $575.
I should have bought a truckload of milsurps 30 yrs ago.
