    M1 to M1D conversion

My M1 from 1942 was my first firearm I ever purchased and after running a lot of ammo through it and getting it to cycle perfectly I would like to use it for deer hunting. I have seen some kits to add a rail to the top but it doesn't look great in my opinion so, I was wondering would I would have to change to fit a m84 scope on it. From what I have been reading I would need the M1D barrel but is that it? I don't want to cut or drill anything and I would like to swap back to the current configuration in the future for the range. what is the best way to do this? I dont have the money to buy the sniper version and i went through a lot of part swapping to get this one to fire every time.. thank you in advance

You dont have to buy a expensive USGI M1D barrel.

You will also need a mount in addition to the scope

Do you have an M84 scope? Have you seen an M84 scope? Have you priced one even for a repro? Once you do you won't be impressed with it for a hunting scope. It really wasn't much of a sniper scope in it's heyday. 2.5X and pretty poor overall optics. And, no, you can't convert an M1 to a repro M1D without some pretty substantial barrel modifications or by buying a real M1D barrel. Once the conversion is done there's no turning back to full standard configuration. The scope mounting block stays whichever you choose and the only way to convert back to a standard M1 is to remove the converted or real M1D barrel and install a standard barrel back in it's place. The good thing is that after the conversion the rifle retains it's standard front and rear sights and can be shot like any other M1 with the block in place. There are scope mounting options that provide a mount that replaces the rear sight base and can be installed and removed at will. There's also the very good option of replacing the rear handguard with a scout scope mount and using a long eye relief scope for your hunting needs.

And BTW, the high price you'll pay for a repro M84 scope of questionable quality just isn't worth the investment for a cheesy 2.5X scope with overall poor optics and terrible light transmission. You might just as well hunt with your standard open sights and save a bunch of money in the process.
