    Winchester buttplate?

Hello everyone! I just purchased this Winchester M1 garand. This is serial number 1,298,xxx which dates to March 1943. This particular rifle is all correct and I believe all original. All three pieces of wood appear to be original and unsanded. Cartouches are excellent, no rebuild marks or import marks. Two questions I have of which one will be in another posting. I will start off with the buttplate. The finish matches excellent with the wood and the rest of the rifle. This is one of which is not marked 2S. I believe I understand Winchester used some non-2S buttplates if I'm not mistaken him. My question is could this be one of those and what should I look for if this is a non-2S buttplate?

Take the buttplate off, take a pic of the backside and we can give you a solid answer.

Here are some pictures of the back of the buttplate. What exactly are we looking for on the back? What can tell us it is a Winchester versus a Springfield?

          Jeff,
          That's a super-nice rifle.
          Congrats on getting it.

Does the buttplate match the ferule?

            Ok, here we go.

#1 - Notice how the lower checkering comes up to a point (red circle). On all other plates the checkering won't go up quite as high and will end flat instead of a point.

#2 - Notice how the lower screw hole looks to be off-center to the left? The hole is actually centered, the stamped checkering is what is off-centered.

#3 - The border of the checkering will be nice and crisp on a plate without a lot of wear.

Your buttplate is SA. I have a couple of WRA plates if you would like to swap...just let me know.

Thank you JD and SFCDave! Is your pictured buttplate that of a 2S or one not marked 2S? If it is a non 2S, they must have the same chacteristics of the 2S stamped plates.

I do already know that these three items which you pointed out are the same very characteristics of a 2S marked buttplate. Did the unmarked buttplates for Winchester also carry these three same characteristics? Just a question! Does anyone know for sure? There is no information in any books on this topic that I know of. Thanks!

Looks like a great rifle. Looks like it has blued screws in the pics and that is something I always look for on original rifles.
What does the gas cylinder look like? Dulite color?

Hello Kevin, thank you for your reply!! The gas cylinder is Winchester and sort of seems bluish in some of my photos. It's not as blue as I would think it should be. Every other part on this Winchester is spot on and I believe original given the wear patterns on everything.
