I posted a thread on the CMP Forums and it seems there was some discussion on whether there should have been a - or a / used in the tag. But no one said it was not a USMC tag. No idea on the op-rod but I am betting the 65 series op-rod was replaced. Since the tag has the serial number on it I am guessing it could have been repaid and stored since 1959.

Any luck on finding out what the code means? Still a fantastic looking rifle!

Contact JoeW2111, he was a Marine 2111 repairman during that time frame and might remember exactly what that code means.

What a great rifle! That is the deepest heel strike I have seen on a 4 mil receiver. Seems most of them (at least the ones I have seen) aren't struck that deep. She's a beauty and one I would be proud to have in my collection. Congrats on the awesome score!!

That's one heck of a great pick up, especially from the NS. So many people scream about the NS not being as good as the SS, but gems like this certainly prove otherwise...at least sometimes!

I recently picked this Springfield 4.27m rifle up from the North Store as you see it. The only item that I find not correct as expected is the D35362 SA op-rod which was used post WWII on rebuilds. I have been told the hang tag that came on this CMP rifle is a USMC repair tag. I have no clue what the R-2 code stands for but it would be pretty cool if it just meant the op-rod was changed out by the USMC. RCS said I should post it up here to see if I get any input.
