Thank you for posting. This is a rare piece. You will find the 1" mount with a Weaver K4 scope also. (American Rifleman Aug. 1998). Also Bruce Canfield addressed this in a Man at Arms Q&A but I do not have a date for the article, just the article.

That's a nice piece of hardware. Will be interesting to see what it goes for in the end.

Ok , I don’t collect sniper rifles but other than a hard to find 1 inch mount (assuming it’s real) for a late M1D, what makes this so expensive. The scope appears to be a regular commercial scope. Were the USMC military scopes post/cross hair or cross hair? How can you tell a military scope, are they all marked MC or with an FSN and have tall turrets? Would it be correct to say people are only bidding on the mount? Trying to learn.

Up to $1,130 . I found a CMP thread (http://forums.thecmp.org/archive/index.php/t-52352.html) that talks about three different scopes : the actual Marine Stith-Killmorgen, the civilian version of the Marine Stith-Kilmorgen, and finally, the Killmorgen Bear Cub 4x. Collector value in decreasing order. Appears that this scope is the last of the three, and that somebody is biding as if it were the first (the Marine version) ... probably because the eBay seller is saying its militarysurplus. But the folks who seem to be in the know don't seem to agree.

Highest bidder has only 7 feedbacks and jumped in late. Hour and 15 mins to go.

Two new bidders jumped in at end and bid it up to $1575.00. Sold at $1575.00

My thoughts exactly on the commercial scope, I’m not home now but I have a green colored scope exactly like the one in the auction except it has the military type post reticle. My dad liked the stith’s evidently as I have the 4x and 6x he had mounted on rifles he purchased in the the 50’s.
