    Old school sight base mod.

This came from a former 2112 from the SoCal area, its a std. base that a groove has been added and a shank from a safety pin is inserted into it. The pin being made of spring steel applies upward pressure on the aperture removing any up and down play. The side rails are still peened but not so deeply as the pressure from the pin/groove remove most of the side play against the apertures geared rail.

Here are some pic's enjoy the old school trickery, enjoy them I do.

Phil how common is this modification. Who developed it, a military armorer or a civilian gunsmith? Very interesting mod.

Not very its the first time I have seen the mod, it came from the personal parts stash from a Marine 2112 that passed away not too long ago that was more into M1's than M-14/M1A's after he retired. I was given a extra just too have and put into my small parts collection. When assembled there is no side to side or up and down play with the cost of USGI NM parts going up and up this tweeking the std base is a option for the owner that only he and his hair dresser would know about.
