Expanding Rifelry As A High School Sport

    Hi All,

My son will enter high school in September. The school doesn't have a Riflery program. But at least one other school in the same league does have such a program. I would like to change that. At the high school and even collegiate level these programs seem to be intentionally limited to light caliber and short range using Anschutz or equivalent rifles. My goal is to introduce such a program to his high school. Does anybody have any ideas or know what the most likely pathway is to achieving this goal? I could imagine that having the backing of a respectable organization (e.g. CMP) and maybe some legal advice would help. I assume that the school may have financial and liability concerns. I live on Long Island. I have not yet approached anybody at the school. I am just wondering if anybody has any experience directing such programs and could offer advice.

I would check with the CMP and any school that has a JROTC program if they have a smallbore team, I remember that Flowing Wells H.S. in Tucson Az. had a smallbore team and this was before I moved away in 2011. Might be worth a call and get what info you can?

+1 to Phil Mcgrath, this is the best way. In my junior high and high school we had JROTC and an optional team within the organization to join was a small bore rifle team. It was not open to anyone except JROTC Cadets though, which was a good thing in my opinion.

Thanks for the ideas. The particular high school my son will be attending does not have affiliation with JROTC. I'll have to make some phone calls and see what the story is.

Would it be an option to enroll him in a different high school that has the program already going? I think it would be easier to get him to a school that has it than to try to get a school to start up a new program with budgets these days. I wish you luck, Sir! Keep us informed what happens.
