The op rod is not "cut" because it was made with the relief cut originally. All RA op rods have the relief cut as do all post war op rods.
As for only paying $700 for it, if you're gonna' get into the "look what I paid for it" camp, back in '81 I ONLY paid $94.50 for my "one per life time" M1 from the DCM. I'm just sayin'.......

Thanks Jon, I was just pointing out that they were rather inexpensive and I didn't understand why it would be profitable to modify one to pass it off as an original to people like me who were uninformed.

I was and I am surprised and dismayed that people would screw with and alter rifles that worn't worth that much money in the first place back then. It seems like a lot of effort for such little return. Now that they are bringing more money and have garnered a lot more interest and money can be made by "correcting" a Garand now I guess.

You asked about any markings if it was a rebuild? The '65 barrel date and NM op-rod are making me think it might have been rebuilt in the 60s. If it was, it would have some form of Arsenal etching on the right, forward receiver leg. These were typically done with an electro-pencil but there are some variations depending on which arsenal would have done it.
If there is something there but looks almost indecipherable, it would probably be Springfield. The inspectors there had the worst penmanship.

Anything etched on the receiver leg?

Rob, there is a fish hook looking etching and also it looks like someone tried to make a 4 pointed star??

Is it possible to get a photo of the markings?
Most arsenal markings were done fairly well with the exception of the ones by Springfield, so maybe that is what you are seeing.
