Help with marking on stock "S.A M"

Hi, New here and I'm looking for some expert help.

I have a 1943 M1 that I am trying to find out more about the stock. I got it back in the 90's from CMP. It has a square stamp on the stock on the left side but it is back by the cheek rest. There is no stamp by the receiver.

I have looked all over and can't find any info on this marking.

Does anyone know what this is?

Thanks, I do see the barrel date is from 6-51 so maybe that is when it was rebuilt.

Yep, what bubba said. There are many variations of the letter found below the SA...i.e., they run almost the gamut of the alphabet.
