Removing Gas Cylinder

I am trying to remove the gas cylinder, but the screw is very tight. I thought I would get a philips head ratchet bit so I can get better torque. Does anyone know the size bit I should search for. Or any other ideas would be appreciated.

Use a large slotted screwdriver with a pair of vise grips.

Remove the butt stock. Then remove the op rod spring and op rod. Point the barrel towards the floor and squirt some Kroils penetrating oil into the gas cylinder. Set the rifle in the corner barrel down for a day letting the Kroils soak in. The Kroils should break the carbon bond in the treads. Any Hardware store should have Kroils.

The best and easiest way is with a 1/4" ratchet or breaker bar. Perfect fit and won't slip like a screwdriver will. It's best to secure the GC in a padded vise when removing or installihg the gas screw/plug to keep excess torque off the GC spines/barrel slots. Not doing so will eventually cause loosening or even barrel slot damage that peenihg will eventually not solve. When reinstalling, do not oil the threads or use anti seize. If you do, the plug will loosen during firing. When installing torque it as tight as you can with that 1/4" ratchet then tighten more. Get shy with it and it will loosen during live fire.
