rear sight bases

Some advanced collectors have told me that the early Winchester Education Order rifles used the Springfield
C46001 rear sight base configuration but unmarked. Any additional information would be appreciated

Is the unmarked rear sight base with the narrow circular cut blued?

Brad, I don't think it is blued, just a dark color, it came from Charlie in NJ, he said to use it in the early EO rifle, Do
you have any addition information on the early EO rear sight bases ?

I don't. I suppose only the few that have been able to disassemble 100,001 would know.

When Winchester serial number 100001 first became available for collectors to study, Craig Kirkup was one of the collectors who
helped prepare a data sheet. Later copies were sent out to some other collectors, I still have mine and others in NJ also received
this data sheet. This data sheet is more detailed than Duff's data sheet as it appeared in his WW2 book.

On the rear sight parts: the rear sight base is listed as early and without numbers or letters only a punch mark and not the late type.
The certain way to confirm this data would be, as Brad stated above, to disassemble the original rifle

So which do you use in an educational restoration , either ? Also what about the rear handguard clip ? I've been told the early ones didn't all have tooling holes but possibly later educational rifles did ? Again, which is correct ? Thanks, Bubba

Paul, the data on 100001 shows the front handguard spacer (two holes) and ferrule deep blue. rear handguard band grooved without holes. Keystone and
comp spring blued. Op rod catch - without finish.

The stock has only a serif P in circle and two equal sized holes and the solid butt plate is checkered without border !!!

You have to remember that the first data sheet on 100001 was made some twenty five years ago and could have errors.

Also Kaufman's son changed the hammer to one with the hole in it then later changed it back, who knows if anything else
was fooled with ?

Winchester did not do any Parkerizing at the start, so they used DuLite or parts were blued or left in the "white"

At one point I recall Duff indicating there was a "substantially original" (still trying to understand this term) two digit WRA rifle that surfaced, however I reached out to him for a data sheet on it and was not able to acquire one.

Both "Mac" and Duff had a long list of two digit Winchesters, too bad more of this information has not surfaced. Interesting
that when CMP Auction sold 100075 some years ago, it had the low guide ribs. Just a production error but still interesting
