The Garand Stand Report - Summer 2005, No. 59

I received this photo from Mr. Billy Pyle of the Garand Stand Report.
The photo is from the cover of The Garand Stand Report No. 59, Summer 2005, and depicts three types of gas trap cylinders.
This photo is reprinted here with the expressed permission of Mr. Pyle, and is not allowed to be used elsewhere without his permission.
    Thank you again, Mr. Pyle!!

I have the perfect numbered stacking swivel for the bottom cylinder........but I'd still need a front sight!!

here is an original front sight that had been "sporterized" along with the gas trap rifle that was found in Calif years ago. The rifle was serial number 42684 and has since been restored (twice by the original owner who passed away not long ago) and could have had additional restoration. Difficult to imagine someone sporterizing a gas trap rifle but it was done more than once !

        Robert,
That's neat to see.....yet painful to see at the same time!
        Thanks for sharing.

Check Billy Pyle's book "The Gas Trap Garand" on pages 126 and 127, shows sn 42664 after an out-of-battery slam fire (caused by the tip of the round firing pin fracturing and being wedged in the bolt face. Besides the heel being separated, both the operating rod and op rod catch were damaged beyond repair. This is very painful to view as it was an original gas trap rifle

I have one of those original front sights that was sporterized by someone. It came from Mac's collection . Makes ya want to throw up a little.
