That gas cylinder could be repaired, seen it done and have a photo somewhere too. Some years ago, original gas trap rifle s/n 42684 was sporterized in Calif and the late Irl Otte bought it and restored it back to its original configuration. I was able to cut out the bayonet stud from a damaged gas port cylinder and made up the rear swivel from steel stock as it is different from the gas port cylinder, to repair the gas trap cylinder from 42684 which looked just like the one from 3343. Also had to drill a 1/8 inch hole in the center of each part and make a inside plug. All this was sent off to Charles Redfield in NJ who TIG weld these parts back on the cylinder. Irl gave me the sporterized front sight (photos). Once the bayonet stud and rear swivel were TIG weld it was very difficult to notice and besides you would not expect these parts were re-attached2 Photos

Paul, my photo is the front sight from 42684 that Irl Otte gave me, the ears were cut off and it was blued. As I said in the above post, 42684 was a Calif rifle that had been sporterized including a recoil pad. After Irl restored it, new data surfaced and it was restored again. It had been sold a few times since Irl had sold it.
Original barrel was D-28286 C-I-B-2 while sn 42664 had a D-28286 C-I-1 barrel
