There has been a few post on different forums concerning rack numbers on early or WW2 M1 rifles. I found this photo of one of my rifle stocks and the rack number 18 was stamped on the front of the pistol grip. This might indicate to me that a wall rack may have once been used to store the weapon.
The handguard is old and really doubt that it would have had the number carved into the wood during any stateside service ?
