Production of the Gas Trap Garands started in 1936. The government was on a tight budget due to the Great Depression, & not enough money was allocated for developement of a new type rifle for the military, so the Ordnance Dep't finagelled the funds by hook & by crook. The first 80 were shop model prototypes, & #81 was the first production model. It & #89 were retained by Springfield Armory for display. #88 is owned by a collector from PA. #89 is the the Marine Museum at Quantico, VA. #'s 93, 94, 95, & 96 are owned by me (the Garand Guy). They are posted on my web site, www.garandguy.com, & are available for viewing at my home in Rahway, NJ, if anyone wants to see them. Gas traps were built up to serial#40000, & then were intermixed with gas port M1's up to #45000. At this point, a newly-developed gas port barrel was fitted to all m1's, & kits were produced by Springfield to retrofit the early M1's with the new gas port barrel. Nearly 4 million M1's were built by Springfield & Wnchester during WWII, ant then later in the 1950's another 1.4 million were built by Springfield, IHC, & HRA. Many of these M1's were rebuild after battle use up until the 1960's after the M14 was adopted.
