    gas trap barrels

repro gas trap barrels have been around since the late 80's. Originals are very expensive, more so for
the early D28286 barrel while the later D-28286 is more common to find.-

photo shows three gas trap barrels - only one is original -which one ?

    AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!

I will guess that the barrel all the way to the left in the first pic is real based on the wear in the splineway and fewer number of threads. Also, the finish on that one looks "older" to me.

I'm just taking a wild swing but I will agree with JD and say the one far Left, the machining in certain areas looks a touch less sharp/defined on that one like the tooling to cut it wasn't as good, in addition to the spline cut looks not as sharply defined as the others.

middle barrel is the original gas trap barrel, the other two are fake ones that I made up years ago. A long time ago, I got some barrels from
a friend a Paragon Sales, these barrels were bulged at the muzzle area, so bad that a gas cylinder would not go on the barrel. These barrels
were perfect to cut back, turn down and thread for a sleeve. Once the sleeve was installed, it was threaded on a lathe for the gas trap cylinder
the single spline cut was done. I gave these barrels to friends in Ohio, Maine and Long Island as gifts until the proper barrels were found. As
I had enough parts/stocks for two more gas trap restorations, I used the two fake barrels in the photo for these rifles.

No way to tell the fakes and original from my photos, only a guess ! gas trap barrels do have some different features and are easy to spot from
gas port barrels. The really good fakers will use a solid barrel blank and add the fake markings and play dumb when they sell it !
