I didn't want to type a much this morning but was was thinking; "Unless you want to make the 'prototype' or 'experimental' argument, ...". But that just opens a can of worms and it would take some pretty good provenance, yadda, yadda, ...
Honestly, it appears to have had each letter applied separately which would be unusual in itself, but in addition it is unlike the two different styles (in general) of CM that I have seen.
You want my speculation? I think WRA had plenty on hand and was using chrome-moly (also known as ordnance steel) whenever they needed, and it wasn't until they started testing and thinking about using Amola (and probably could get more money out of Ordnance for it) that they saw some need to distinguish between them.
JMHO (and I still get a kick out of the parts marked with both A and CM, ...).
