    SA 7417 Project

A couple of years ago I was fortunate enough to purchase SA 7417 as a completely stripped receiver from a member on the CMP Forums. Prior to that, I purchased a 3-42 barrel that had quite a lot of pitting, but still maintained manageable TE and ME measurements. Shortly after I received SA 7417 I realized that the barrel and receiver were in similar condition, and sported pitting in similar places. Thus, to me, it only made sense to mate the two together as an early Spring 1942 initial conversion project / restoration.

A couple of months ago I toyed around with using an extremely early sight on this project, but just this evening realized (with help from Bubba1) that it really isn't realistic to use such an early sight on a 1942 rifle. So, I decided to piece together a Type 1 lockbar from pieces that I had in my parts boxes.

As it sits right now, SA 7417 has a 3-42 barrel, a Type 1 rear sight, matching round-nose clip latch, and an SA -12 RE5B bolt. All have matching finish to the receiver. The barrel's chamber is in the white and there's no chrome on the pads.

It's a work in progress, so stay tuned...........and, of course, any suggestions are always welcome!!

    Cheers,
    ---Brian

Here's some additional photos of how she sits at this time. I anticipate more progress on this project in the next few days.

I love the pile of sight knobs - that is serious restoring right there.

              Thanks guys!!

Here are some photos that I just took out in the bright sunlight. The lack of finish on the parts results in a bit of a glare, sorry!

Here is the project as of 2244 hours on 12/07/17........

Op rod catch is late, in the white with bright pin, and no-lip accelerator.
Follower arm is in the white, WW2 with casting codes.
                  Bullet guide is milled.
Follower assembly is marked "8" on the tail with the late slide.
                  Follower arm pin is "stepped."

Is all of this "correct" for a Spring '42 build?

I missed this previously, glad to see this receiver going to good use. I had looked and didn't notice that this was the one. The type one sight is about the hardest one to find, this should look really good with a worn, been there, done that looking GHS stock. Good job on this one for sure.

                          Hey guys,
                          Thanks for the encouragement.
Had a busy day today with the family, so no time for gun fun unfortunately.
I did make some contacts for some more parts, so that's always a good thing.
Stay tuned for updates very soon!
                          Thanks again,
                          ---Brian

I have and had M1s and M1 Carbines in mint near new condition. But its the ones that show wear and tear that intrigue me. You have to appreciate that been there done that look.

Okay, so being that I'm snowed in I figured that I should try and make some more progress on this project.

I decided on this stock, it's a GHS small wheel, unmodified. It appears as though early 1942 would have been a transition period between GHS large wheel and the GHS small wheel, so I think this stock is "OK" to use here.

                              Thoughts?
