    The average gastrap restoration?

Is this the average gastrap restoration? I was always enamored of the early parts and bit by bit it is nowhere near as painful so I would grab stuff when it came around.

    How is yours going?

Everything there looks to be for a real early restoration.....

I lack a few of the hardest parts left on my last gas trap but I've thoroughly enjoyed watching some of the newer collectors work on their restorations. Each one is different from the other. Most want a complete and correct Gas Trap as we generally all do with any of our restorations. It is very difficult to complete a 100 % USGI gas trap as finding some of the parts are almost impossible. I really enjoy seeing those who would build one to shoot and enjoy them. There are a few shootable gas systems out there. I have a friend who made some shootable keystones. That makes the restorations somewhat more affordable and doable, although it still comes with a price . Maybe we'll see more being shot at matches . . Now that would be awesome.

Thanks for posting the photos. What serial range are you trying to restore?

Maybe if I could find a serial number somewhere around like the 1591 range, ...

Seriously, I never went a whole lot further with the idea. The really hard parts like the barrel and such are apparently made from unobtainium, and I was concentrating on early Winchester at the same time. But then you cannot study one without also studying the other and reference parts are required, so, ... what can I say, I am kind of a parts geek.

                Not 1591, but close!

I've got three shootable trap builds. Two are complete and one just needs a couple items to be up and running. I shoot the snot out of mine. They have shot at Perry and TMP. Most always, people notice and gather around. My builds are all later-25000,43000, and 48000 serials. They were pricey enough and seemed easier to find the correct parts. I suppose if I would find a shootable front end with the lightening cut and straight sight I would pursue an earlier build. Why? I don't know. I guess it's the thrill of the chase and seeing one complete is intoxicating.I'm not telling you guys anything you don't already know because the same types are on this forum daily. I will say this-the folks that are attracted to these early pieces of M1 history are some of the best out there!

I am working on three. All in the 33000 to 35000 serial range. One was never modified for 7th round stoppage. Right now they all are WWII rebuilds with a lot of correct parts. Its addictive and very expensive. Do not know if I will ever be able to complete them. Good luck with your projects you got a great head start on the parts.

Pretty sure that was my first MS hammer in that group.

My GT effort 10,xxx, only lacks a Ratworx front end, to make it a total black hole for $$$.

I have a nice long throat early stock, but alas, no visible SPG cartouche. Has two proof P's, one without serifs and one with.
My parts are pretty much #'ed properly. The rear sight took awhile to procure, part by part. It is fun to handle, even without the bbl assembly.

The TG does not have the concentric circles.
It seems to me, from pics, that the boss is larger on the tg's with the concentric circles.
I may have to resort to making my own gas cyl, and use a criterion bbl.

I know you guy's are not counting the cost and its the thrill of the parts chase, but what do you figure you have rolled into your fun project? I built my clone MkII mod 1 NM M1 for what many would say dirt cheap. So before I say what mine ran cost wise, where are you guys at for total investment cost.
