    SA 24590 Direct Conversion Project

In late 2014, just prior to the holidays, I purchased SA 24590 as a bare receiver from a friend of mine in northern NJ. Along with this receiver came an early trigger group, which had some nice later-type gas trap era parts. Being that it was a "put together" group, and the parts really didn't match well wear or color-wise I decided to split the group up for use on different projects down the road.

Anyway, since 24590 has had the 7th-round-fix applied to it I decided it would be best served for use a direct conversion project. The man from whom I purchased this receiver from led me to another man whom had a couple early barrels. While I was hoping for a 1940 barrel, of any month, I was almost just as excited to find that he had a 1941 barrel to offer me. While it's far from "nice" it still is a 1941 barrel and it's the only one I have. The ME and TE both read at 4 and the bore is dark and frosty. The outside has some serious pitting and it's quite apparent that this barrel has seen its fair share of corrosive ammo. Fine with me.......I really like the "been there, done that" look and it's dripping with history......if only this barrel could talk!!!

At any rate, one of the REALLY NEAT things about this receiver / barrel combination is how well it matches. Have a look at the pix and let me know what you think.....good, bad, and ugly!!

I like it. The best Garands are the ones that show actual use.

      Thanks Rich.
I agree, and really like putting old war horses back together. I just find it very rewarding.
      Thanks again!
